Projects

These are a few of my flying models, also current build projects and future builds waiting in the wings. I like to pick obscure or less popular WWII subjects, it makes it more fun but also a bit more problematic finding reference material.

Project 1: Arado Ar-196A3

  • A WWII German reconnaissanceartillery spotter seaplane used by the Kreigsmarine.
  • Size: 72” wingspan (1/6 scale)
  • Engine: OS 120 4 stroke
  • Status: Constructed, fibre glassed and primed. Panel lines done now, rivets are now being simulated

Project 2: Fairey Firefly AS5

  • A post WWII, navy fighter used by the Royal Navy, Royal Australian Navy and the Royal Canadian Navy (when we had aircraft carriers)
  • Size: 80” wingspan (1/5 scale)
  • Engine: Saito 180 4 stroke
  • Status: In parts collection mode, though I have started to frame up the lower 1/2 of the fuselage (I couldn’t resist!)

Project 3: Hawker Tempest II

  • The Tempest II was too late for WWII. But was used by the RAF against communist insurgents in Malaysia (I believe) in the late 1940’s. Very cool looking aircraft with a Bristol Centaurus engine in it.
  • Size: 87” wingspan (1/5.6 scale)
  • Engine: Revolution R50
  • Status: Have the plans, engine, cowl and canopy still collecting the rest of the parts

Project 4: Hawker Typhoon

We’ll call this the dream stage. If and when I get to this one. It will be my third Typhoon, the first two were 72” wingspan designed by Brian Taylor. My first one was my first attempt at building from plans and when finished it was 8 lbs overweight!! It never flew. My second one, though 4 lbs overweight (I’m getting better) it flew 3 times. On the third flight, the elevator servo arm came off the servo at the bottom of a victory roll at top speed!

  • Size: 80” wingspan
  • Engine: Not known yet
  • Status: Need to get the plans from Sepp Uiberlacher

These are actually photos of the second Typhoon I built (and crashed) in 2006

Project 5: de Havilland Mosquito

Now we’re REALLY dreaming! I don’t know when or how. But I absolutely MUST build this all-time great airplane!!
